(ENG) HERO OF TODAY: LUKE (SOLAR SOMA)

After listening the brand new debut EP from canadian progster Solar Soma, here I'm having a little speach with the band, knowing something more about them and about So Much For Style (you can still download it for free at this location).

1. How was born Solar Soma project?
The guitarist Chris and the drummer Luke have been in bands together since they were teenagers... Cat - the singer - came along later and the three used to be in a band that played much softer acoustic music. Later they got together again once Chris and Cat started their recording studio and the music keeps exploring heavier sounds. Shaun the bass player is a recent addition, there have been several bass players over the many years. When there is not a bass player around, Chris also writes and records the bass parts.

2. How much have you worked on you debut EP?
The EP consists of some songs that are very old for the band and some that are quite new. There really was enough material for a whole album or more, but it was taking a long time for Cat to mix the songs herself, so they decided to put out the first five just to get started. The EP has had a lot of work done on it, mainly because the band start recording as they are writing the song, so it blends into quite a long process until the final product. This EP therefore has been coming for several years, but now it’s out, there will be much more music quite quickly, it is already underway.

3. What does Crackd talk about?
Crackd (2nd song on the EP) is written by Cat (the lyrics) and is about mental illness and feeling angry about being mis-understood. Cat worries that society is too quick to judge what is “normal” and has very little understanding of different mental and emotional states. The song is about feeling strong and knowing yourself and being proud to shout that out loud. The song also tries to point out that if you know yourself and your emotions well, you can protect yourself in the world better.

4. ... and what about Lunchbox Monster?
Lunchbox Monster is about someone in Cat’s family who she feels became ‘lost’...who rages at the world but cannot reach the softer and more vulnerable side of himself and so he becomes dangerous. He is splendid and full of energy but the energy is uncontrolled. The song is about wanting to connect with someone you love and wanting to protect and teach them, but they keep you away. Cat writes the lyrics for all the songs.

5. Who do we have to thanks for the marvelous artwork?
The artwork for the cover is also done by Cat. She and Chris also produce the songs in their own studio, and Cat does the mixing for the music. The whole band has alot of input into the songs and the arrangements as they go along...

6. Would you like to leave a message to our readers?
Thankyou for listening to our music. We really hope that it offers something to your life, even for a moment. Chris, Cat, Luke and Shaun.
BTW Shaun has his own project called 'Projected Twin' (you may have already come across this band already). He has just released his second album called 'Earth Vs World'. You should definitley check it out, most of the instrumentation was played by solar soma and produced and engineered by Cat. It is a fantastic album! (Check out Projected Twin at this location!)
