BACK FIVE YEARS AFTER THE RELEASE OF THEIR DEBUT ALBUM, SPIRAL KEY WILL RELEASE THEIR 2ND OPUS AN ERROR OF JUDGEMENT ON EARLY 2018 SO I DECIDED TO MAKE THEM SOME QUESTION ABOUT THEIR PROJECT AND THE NEW FULL LENGTH!
Hi and welcome on the pages of The Bible of Metal!! Finally back in the scene after five years since your debut!
David: Hi! It’s great to be here!
Ken: Yeah. It’s been a while, eh?
Before we start talking about your new-born An Error of Judgement, would you like tell us more about the born of Spiral Key?
D: Ken and I joined up almost exactly seven years ago now, and found we had a lot musically in common. It was only natural that we’d try and do something together. We’ve learned so much since then, and we’re still learning something new almost every day!
K: We’re both very different people, but somehow this partnership just works. We initially met somewhat out of the blue via another musical project, and when that started to fail it turned out that we had shared vision and abilities that fitted together. I think its telling when you can name your musical partner in the list of your own influences.
I think that the Magritte themed artwork cover by Mattias Norén matches perfectly with your new album's title, was it a suggestion of yours or his idea?
D: I’m a great admirer of Mattias’ work; his art adorns many of my favourite album covers, and he’s always seemed synonymous with modern progressive albums to me. I was thrilled to be able to have his work on ‘An Error of Judgement’, and we left it up to him. We’re really happy with the result.
K: Mattias has really pulled out the stops for us, and not only has he produced a great piece of work for us, he has been a joy to work with.
When did you start working on your new album? What inspired it the most?
D: We started in earnest in mid-2016, during a successful year that really revitalized the band. For me, much of the inspiration came from the world, from news and global events; everything from the far right in the USA to the British EU referendum seemed driven by poor decisions and self-interest. We’re not a political band, nor are we political people, but the politics of our time certainly finds its way into the mood of the album.
K: Its very difficult to avoid what’s going on in the wider world, and it all filters into your internal dialogue, so it has to emerge somewhere. There is a lot more going on than that in the album though; the communal humour we share turns up in unexpected places on the record, but I’ll leave you to find it 😊
Why did you choose Hollywood Dreams as the 1st single taken from your new album?
D: So much of this album is symphonic and dramatic; it seemed fitting that the first single would be about recurring, big themes in Hollywood movies! We think it’s a great showcase for the album: epic in scope without being too long!
K: It was a very obvious choice as there are aspects within this track that are replicated throughout the rest of the album. I’m not saying the whole album sounds like this, there’s a lot of variation in melody, harmony and mood, but it’s a good marker for what to expect.
And by the way, if you had to choose a movie as inspiration for a song, which one would you choose?
D: Today I would pick ‘District 9’, one of my favourite movies and suitably dark and moody in theme. Tomorrow it will probably be something else!
K: That’s a tough one. I’m so in love with ‘2001:A Space Odyssey’ that I know it’s already happened, and on this record I was influence by the BBC Docudrama ‘Appropriate Adult’, but this year the one such item from the visual arts that has affected me was the recent series of ‘The Hand Maids Tale’, and I suspect something from that may pop out. That show was amazing and terrifying in equal measure.
What're your plans for the next future? Will you release another single?
D: There’s definitely more coming soon, you’ll hear more of the album before release!
K: Wait and see!!
Would you like to leave a message to our readers?
D: We’ve had a great time making this album and getting it out there, and we think it’s the best work we’ve ever done. We hope you like it as much as we do!
K: In love with this album, which is a great thing to be able to say about your own work. We’ve ended up making some new friends throughout all this, learned a whole load of things too. Can’t wait to be able to perform it live.
